Highly recommended

I first considered a hair transplant about a year before the surgery.

With an inherent nervousness about any type of invasive surgery I was unsure if it was the route I wanted to take.

I began to do a lot of research and discovered that there were all sorts of forums and discussions and Hair Palace came up frequently, so I decided to further research Hair Palace and one or two others.

I was pleased to see that free consultations were offered in London so I booked one and went along.

At that time I was using Regaine which had shown some improvement but didn’t feel like a permanent solution.

The consultation was in central London, easy to get to and well organised.

I felt like I was given the necessary time to ask questions and explore it further as an option with no obligation.

I went away and 5 or 6 months later, having stopped using Regaine and noticed an escalation in the thinning,

I booked a second free consultation. This one was even better. As before there was a co-ordinator and a doctor there and they assessed my hair loss.

This time though, they brought an electronic microscope which was plugged into a screen that I could see to show the different areas around my head.

They also explained more about the science behind hair loss and the success of the treatment.

Again I felt no obligation to book with them, but I instantly made up my mind that I would.

They offer incentives if you book within a certain amount of time after your consultation so I decided to make the most of those.

I contacted my co-ordinator with a strict time frame and he explained that they would be able to find dates to suit me and so they did and it was booked.

The booking process was easy and there was constant assistance available at every step of the way.

No money changes hands until you are at the clinic on the first day of the procedure.

They organised transfers from the airport to the hotel and I also chose to have my blood test done in Budapest too, so the necessary extra days were tagged on and accommodated.

Transfers to the blood test lab were arranged and that whole process from leaving the hotel to returning was just an hour leaving the whole day to explore the city.

The next day I had the first day of my two day procedure.

I believe that they will transplant up to 6000 follicles and the assessment was that I needed around 5000.

Any more than 4000 tips you from a one day procedure to two days.

I was met at the clinic with a bright and professional co-ordinator called Marianna who was there throughout my two days.

She was clear, warm and very supportive.

I disclosed that I was nervous and she did all she could to reassure me.

I noticed that the clinic is clean and tidy and I’m given a cordoned off area with seats and a locker to get changed, go through paperwork, have a pre-surgical consultation with the doctor and take the necessary medication.

My head was shaved leaving my hair at about 1-2mm in length and then I was guided to the surgery room where the procedure began.

First it’s anesthetic shots to numb the donor area, there are quite a few of these and I was lying facedown in a massage-style bed.

My doctor, Erika Gucsi was excellent explained everything to me as it was happening and was extremely swift with the anesthetic shots.

Once the area is numbed the extraction begins and the medication had set in to relax me, so I actually found myself falling asleep during the procedure.

After a few hours we broke for lunch. I was invited to look at my hair follicles if I wanted to.

They were each being cleaned and counted individually. I headed off back to my cordoned off area for lunch.

The selection is wide and the quality of the food is ok. Fairly basic.

Then we were off to the afternoon session and again I was guided through very professionally and with any questions I had being answered in full as we went.

The accommodation was comfortable enough, although the room could have been slightly larger, as there were other larger rooms available on the same floor of the hotel.

It was clean and tidy and close to decent food options and round the corner from the clinic.

The second day was much the same. I had a different doctor (which I’d been told would be the case the day before), Ljuba Zsolnai who’s process was slightly different but equally as efficient and informative.

Both days the procedure is over by about 4pm.

Very clear instructions are given about what not to eat/drink before each day and then all the aftercare is explained and handed over in charts.

There is a requirement to take and send photos throughout the recovery process but the option to have free consultations with a doctor to check progress in London is also available at various junctures which is a great option.

I felt supported and that everything was exactly I had been explained and described to me beforehand.

The staff are exceptionally patient and I even met people who were going back for a second time to service a different area of their head, which was the best example of customer satisfaction that I could have imagined.

I’m now looking forward to the results which should begin to be noticeable by month 4 but should be fully visible from months 12-15.

I couldn’t recommend Hair Palace more highly.

Caffeine shampoo against hair loss: Does it really work?

$
0
0

Hair loss can be traumatic, whether it manifests as a receding hairline, male pattern baldness, alopecia areata, or any other form.

But the market for hair loss treatments is bigger than ever, and consumers have a diverse range of options. Hair transplants, medications, and specialist products are all available — including caffeine shampoo.

Brits may drink around 95 million cups of coffee each day in the UK, but the prospect of washing your hair with a caffeine-based product could seem odd (to say the least).

Unusual or not, the important issue here is the effect. Does caffeine shampoo really help to prevent hair loss? And if so, how?

How does a caffeine shampoo work?

Caffeine shampoos contain caffeine extract. They’re formulated to stimulate hair growth and reduce thinning/loss.

Massaging the shampoo into the scalp, and getting it into the roots, is believed by some to have a positive impact on hair loss.

The aim is to provide the scalp with that same jolt of energy that a strong coffee may give you first thing in the morning: you might feel more alert and energised after a cup or two of your favourite brew.

However, any noticeable change in hair loss or growth would not be instant.

It’s highly likely that consumers would need to use a caffeine shampoo for a matter of weeks or even months to see a benefit (if any occurred).

Is caffeine shampoo really effective?

It’s still unclear whether or not caffeine shampoo can stop hair loss and encourage growth. And certain brands have come under fire for claiming their products can do just that.

In 2018, the company behind Alpecin Caffeine Shampoo was banned from promoting their shampoo with the claim that it could reduce hair loss, after a watchdog ruled there was no suitable evidence to support it..

In its defence, the brand highlighted several studies that purported to show caffeine’s ability to stimulate hair growth, but the Advertising Standards Authority found they couldn’t support the claims.

How does the medical community view caffeine shampoos?

It appears not to endorse the use of caffeine shampoo as an effective way to combat hair loss.

Still, certain studies do hint at caffeine’s positive effect on thinning hair. For example, research from 2007 revealed that caffeine helped to block the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in men’s hair follicles. (DHT is the hormone responsible for hair loss.)

Roots appeared to become longer and wider, while the anagen (hair growth) stage of the hair growth cycle seemed to be lengthened.

Similar effects were seen in female hair.

Despite this, there is still a lack of proof that caffeine shampoo can help to prevent hair loss, encourage growth, and restore hair overall.

Further research on patients is required to determine how effective caffeine-based products can be.

Are there any side effects?

Certain side effects have been linked to caffeine shampoos, though nothing too serious.

Scalp irritation is one potential outcome amongst those sensitive to certain ingredients, specifically the caffeine. However, this may vary from one user to another.

What alternative treatments exist?

Anyone experiencing hair loss is much more likely to reduce hair loss and restore growth through hair transplants, rather than caffeine shampoos.

Minoxidil and finasteride are common alternatives, though their effects are variable.

Their results are also temporary: you would need to keep applying them to the scalp for the rest of your life to maintain any positive results.

The best hair transplants, though, provide lasting growth.

Numerous celebrities have benefited from hair transplants, such as Jamie Laing and Antonio Conte.

Two types are available:

  • Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
  • Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

They may appear the same, but they’re significantly different.

FUT hair transplant

FUT procedures involve cutting a strip of flesh from the back of the head.

The surgeon will dissect this into tiny pieces to harvest healthy hair follicles, which are implanted into incisions across the scalp.

The cut on the back of the head will be closed, but the patient will have a visible scar.

Scars after the FUT hair transplant method

If they want to keep their surgery discreet, the patient will need to wear their hair long enough to hide the scar.

This can severely limit their choice of hair cuts and styles.

FUE hair transplant

FUE is a more effective hair restoration option, and a minimally invasive alternative to FUT.

There’s no need to cut a section of flesh for harvesting follicles during an FUE hair transplant: the surgeon will extract grafts using a needle with a 1mm diameter instead.

The patient will have no visible scarring on the back or sides of the head (the donor areas).

The hair follicles will be implanted into the target zones on the scalp, usually at the crown or hairline.

The most advanced form of FUE hair transplant is the FUE2 Safe System technique.

Surgeons use an innovative micro punch to remove grafts without making incisions, and 95 to 100% of implanted hairs grow back.

The healing process is also 50% shorter than with a traditional FUE hair transplant.

This can create natural, seamless hair growth over a period of 12 to 18 months (in the majority of cases).

You can view some of our hair transplant before and after photos in our gallery.

Caffeine shampoo simply can’t compete.

FAQ

How can caffeine help hair growth?

Caffeine is believed to stimulate hair growth by targeting DHT, the hormone responsible for hair loss.

Is it clinically proven that these shampoos work?

No: certain studies indicate that caffeine may be effective in isolated cases, but there is no evidence that caffeine shampoos can consistently stop hair loss and stimulate hair growth.

What other treatments for hair loss exist?

Minoxidil and finasteride are common treatments, but patients must keep using them if visible effects actually occur. FUE hair transplants can provide lasting, natural hair restoration, targeting specific areas of the scalp.

Its now 6 days since my surgery at the…

Its now 6 days since my surgery at the Hair Palace Clinic Budapest, and i honestly and truly cannot thank Dr Attilla and his team enough for the whole procedure, was very apprehensive at the begining, about going to another country to have this surgery, but any worries i had soon disappeared after meeting Dr Atilla and his team.
They are the upmost professionals , and make you feel like you are one of there family, the team made the whole procedure quite an enjoyable experience, its virtually pain free, you can feel the first couple of injections, but from then on the whole process is completely pain free.
Hair Palace have everything organised for your visit to there clinic in Budapest, from picking you up promptly from the airport and taking you directly to your excellent accommodation, were you have everything you need for your stay, there.
I would 100% recommend Hair Palace to anyone who is looking to have a hair transplant, the whole team really are true professionals, and make you feel totally comfortable for your entire stay in Budapest, i had 6100 grafts, and cant wait to go back there next year for another 1000 grafts.
I wholeheartedly believe that Hair Palace is one of the finest hair transplant clinics in Europe, if not the very best in Europe, i rate them 10/10.

Should have done it sooner!

I thought about a hair transplant for years but was simply too nervous to go ahead with it. I googled different clinics over the years and even got a quote from a clinic in Ireland which was way over my budget.
Eventually I found Hair Palace and read all the great reviews and even found a guy in my home town who had the same procedure done there. So I decided it’s now or never.. Stupidly enough my biggest worry wasn’t the pain or the post-operative recovery, it was walking in the streets and going to the airport after the surgery.
Well first thing is there’s absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about and people hardly even noticed my head at all. Anyway they’re strangers so who cares.. So… I was met at the airport by the Hair Palace driver who was really nice and friendly. Took about 25 minutes to the apartment.
The apartment is modern and clean and close to a big mall with some restaurants. We used the Wolt app to order food mostly. There’s also a small shop right on the corner beside the apartment which has everything you need. I walked to the clinic on the morning of the first surgery.
Took about 15 mins and easy to find. There I waited a few mins before I went up in the lift and was greeted by my translator for the two days, Edina. She was extremely pleasant and welcoming and made me feel alot less nervous in just a few minutes. I picked out some food for lunch and chose a movie to watch during the procedure.
Second day was pretty much the same and the lovely Edina was really great and helpful again. The clinic itself is spotlessly clean and modern. All the staff are very friendly and my doctor (Virag) was very nice but also 100% serious and professional.
You really feel like you have nothing to worry about. There is not really much pain at all as others have said and you’re given a relaxant which means you’ll feel fine or maybe even fall asleep which I did both days. There’s really not much else to say that hasn’t already been said… It’s only been two weeks so I will write again next year but I recommend Hair Palace 100%.
Everything including the after care when you get home is fantastic.
They really do everything they can to make you feel good and to make sure the transplant works well and they’re always there to answer questions before and after the surgery.

Fantastic hair transplant experience

I am a 30 year old male who chose Hair Palace for a ~4000 hair FUE procedure. Hair Palace in Budapest had fantastic reviews and during the consultation, I was very impressed by the facility and the professional attitude and knowledge of the staff.

I just finished my procedure today. It started at 7:45am and ended around 3:45pm. The procedure involved a surgeon, two assistants, and an interpreter. The procedure went as smoothly as I could have hoped – it was easy, staff was very helpful, amenities were great, and the surgery itself was relatively painless.

For the procedure, I wholeheartedly recommend Hair Palace. I could not have asked for any more.

The results take 3 months to start showing and 6-12 months to see full effects. Hair Palace schedules regular consultations to check progress of the after care. I have not had any follow ups yet (they start one week after the surgery), but I expect that they will be fantastic and helpful. I will post another review after the post op period and after the results begin to show!

Overall, for anyone that wants to dial back the clock and restore receding hair, I give Hair Palace in Budapest my highest recommendation.

Complete coverage step by step! – Xavier’s hair transplant result

$
0
0

Xavier is one of our returning patients; he had multiple surgeries at our clinic.

In this post, we would like to show you how he achieved the result you can see above!

Xavier’s hair loss started when he was 18-20 years old, and over the years he lost much of the density at the top.

He kept his hair short for years; while he was interested in the options for hair restoration, the unnatural looking results of earlier hair transplant techniques kept him from going ahead.

A few years later, one of his friends had a hair transplant with good results, which encouraged him to take another look into the hair transplant.

Xavier sent his photos via e-mail so we can assess his condition and make him a quote:

Xavier before the hair transplant
Xavier before the hair transplant

From the pictures, it became evident that his hair loss affected the whole top part of the scalp.

In these cases, it is not possible to cover the top with a single hair transplant. However, if the donor area allows, a good density can be achieved all over the scalp with multiple sessions.

In such cases, we recommend starting with the hairline and to proceed gradually towards the back.

This way, growing the hair longer and combing it back, the patient can get coverage on an area larger than the implanted section.

Furthermore, the patient will see the new hairline in the mirror every day, and the change will surely catch the eye of others too.

And the visible result can be motivating for patients during a multi-stage, time-consuming process.

We have recommended this course of action for Xavier too, who agreed with the doctors.

First surgery

We carried out Xavier’s first hair transplant on the 20-21st of June 2016, with the FUE2 technique.

It was safe to extract 5300 hairs from his donor area that was used to build out the hairline:

Xavier FUE2 hair transplant
After the first surgery

After the procedure patients can travel home, but they must follow the doctors’ post-op instructions.

It is important to avoid strong sunlight and physical extertion, and it is not allowed to cover the head.

Xavier 1 week after his hair implantation
1 week after the surgery

1 week after the surgery the implanted area is well defined. There is still a bit of redness, and some scabs.

In the next couple days, weeks, as the scalp heals, the traces of the surgery disappear completely.

Around the end of the 3rd post-op week, the implanted hairs start to fall out – this typically lasts until the end of the 3rd month.

In almost all of the cases, these processes develop more or less differently.

For example, for someone with fair, more sensitive skin, it might take longer for the redness to fade away. And while some might experience hair fall 17-19 days after the surgery, in some cases the implanted hairs fall out in a minimal number.

There could be small differences detected in Xavier’s case too. At his 3 months’ check-up quite a lot hairs could be seen on the implanted area:

Xavier 3 months after the surgery
3 months after the surgery

However, the truly remarkable change happens only in the next months.

The new hairs grow out gradually and the density increases month by month.

6 months after the surgery roughly half of the final result is visible.

The growth period ends around 12-15 months after the hair transplant.

Preparing for his next surgery Xavier chose a shorter hairstyle. But thanks to this, we can see the result achieved with the first surgery precisely:

Xavier's result of the 1st hair transplant
Result of the 1st hair transplant

Second hair transplant

We carried out Xavier’s second implantation on the 10-11th of October 2017.

With another 5000 hairs we could continue building up the density behind the previously implanted area.

In this picture, you can take a look at the newly implanted zone in the middle of the scalp:

Xavier's second hair transplant
After the 2nd hair transplant

The healing process goes all the same after the second surgery.

In the first 3 weeks, patients must take care of the implanted area, and they have to gently soak the scabs off.

In the following period the newly transplanted hairs fall out, and after the 3rd post-op month the density starts to improve gradually.

In Xavier’s case some change was already noticeable at the 3 months’ check-up.

Xavier 3 months after hair implantation
3 months after the 2nd surgery

However, the real transformation of the implanted area starts from the 4th post-op month.

Month by month, new hairs grow out – as a result the density improves gradually.

Half a year after the surgery we can talk about a striking change.

WAY-316606: The real cure for hair loss or just a false hope?

$

Hair loss affects around 40% of men in the UK. And it can be incredibly hard to accept at any age, but particularly when it strikes in a man’s twenties or thirties.

Fortunately, people living with hair loss have access to real solutions today — including cutting-edge hair transplants. The latest technologies offer effective hair restoration with natural, seamless results.

But researchers continue to work on alternative hair loss treatments, often with mixed results. And WAY-316606 is one of the latest to make headlines.

It may not have the catchiest name, but WAY-316606 has still sparked excitement. Could this be a real cure for hair loss? Or is it simply unviable?

Let’s take a closer look.

What is WAY-316606?

WAY-316606 is a drug used to treat osteoporosis, a condition causing bones to become fragile and more vulnerable to fractures. This is, sadly, common: osteoporosis affects more than three million people in the UK.

WAY-316606 received media attention when researchers from The University of Manchester’s Center for Dermatology Research published a study in the journal PLOS Biology. The project was led by Dr Nathan Hawkshaw and his colleagues, with an aim to identify new solutions for stimulating hair growth.

They set out to understand exactly how Cyclosporine A (CsA), a well-known immunosuppressive drug, affected hair development. CsA has been prescribed for autoimmune conditions and organ transplant rejection since the ‘80s, but it can have certain side effects — including the growth of unwanted hair.

With this in mind, the researchers undertook a complete analysis of isolated follicles taken from a human scalp, donated by more than 40 patients.

How does it work?

The researchers at The University of Manchester’s Centre for Dermatology Research discovered that CsA decreases SFRP1 (secreted frizzled-related protein 1) expression.

What is SFRP1? It’s a protein known to inhibit the formation and growth of certain tissues, including hair follicles.

This is a protein in the human body, and known to block Wnt signaling pathways, which control numerous processes related to key bodily processes. This is believed to play a role in osteoporosis development.

SFRP1 and hair loss
Source: Plos Biology

Why? Because the pathway stimulates the production of more osteoclasts (cells responsible for bone resorption, or the breakdown of bone tissue) than osteoblasts (cells which form bones).

CsA activates the Wnt signaling pathway and cultivates clearer differentiation between both cell types. Ultimately, this results in decreased degradation of bone and increased bone growth.

SFRP1 and hair loss

SFRP1 brings the catagen stage of the natural hair cycle into effect prematurely. This is the second phase of the cycle, following the anagen phase but preceding the telogen phase.

During the anagen phase, hair bulbs develop at the base of follicles and mature into a strand of hair which eventually grows beyond the scalp.

The hair bulb detaches from its blood supply and the hair rises further along the hair shaft, while the follicles shrink around it to aid its movement. The hair strand remains attached to the follicle but only loosely, so that it can be shed in a normal, healthy way.

However, when SFRP1 is blocked, hair follicles stay in the anagen stage of the growth cycle for longer. And this encourages more growth.

The team found that CsA triggers unwanted hair growth in patients by taking away the natural blockage that could inhibit follicular growth.

Dr Hawkshaw realised that WAY-316606 targeted the same mechanism as CsA by antagonising SFRP1 specifically. He used this drug to treat sample hair follicles — and discovered that the hair growth was enhanced as it would be with CsA.

He believes that using WAY-316606 (or compounds of a similar nature) could stimulate hair growth to the same extent that CsA can, if not better.

What does the latest research say about WAY-316606?

Clinical trials into WAY-316606 as a hair loss treatment seem to have been ongoing, yet there’s little news available. There has been online speculation that a company may have been coming closer to bringing a hair treatment product to the Italian market, though it’s unclear whether there has been significant progress at the time of writing.

However, CsA has also been connected to renal failure, which means that it could pose a significant health risk. While WAY-316606 or similar compounds may function differently and target hair loss/growth specifically, it’s still crucial that any companies looking to develop treatments bear this side effect in mind.

Is there a future for WAY-316606?

The future of WAY-316606 as a hair loss treatment appears uncertain. Clinical trials and extensive research are vital to determine how effective this could be as an alternative to established treatments, such as minoxidil and finasteride.

There’s also the matter of application. Would this new “miracle cure” be administered orally as a pill, or would it applied directly to the scalp as a topical treatment? In both cases, it’s possible that patients would need to keep using it for the foreseeable future to retain the benefits.

That’s the core issue with existing non-surgical treatments: even if they do achieve a positive result, the patient must follow a rigorous application routine. Otherwise, the hair that has regrown may fall out and bring the user’s shedding back to its previous condition.

It’s fair to say that it’s far too early to hail WAY-316606 as a credible treatment for hair loss.

At present, the most effective hair restoration method is a hair transplant.

Hair transplants: How they work?

Hair transplants have become far more accessible in the last decade. More and more people (particularly men) all over the world trust hair clinics to restore their growth. It’s increasingly common for men to undergo cosmetic treatments to improve their appearance, and hair transplants are amongst the most popular options.

The best hair transplants will increase hair growth in target areas, whether this is at the hairline, on the crown, or anywhere else on the scalp. Patients can expect to see their hair reach a more youthful level of coverage.

During a hair transplant, a surgeon will remove healthy hair follicles from donor areas: the back and/or sides of the head (depending on the surgery method chosen). These areas tend to remain unaffected by hair loss in the majority of cases, particularly with male pattern baldness or receding hairlines.

These harvested follicles will be implanted into the thinning/bald spots on the scalp through a delicate process. This typically takes hours to complete, particularly for more severe hair loss, but the eventual results speak for themselves.

Here’s just one example of a successful hair transplant:

WAY-316606 or fue2 hair transplant method

Hair transplants: What types are available?

Two hair transplant types are available: Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

Fut vs FUE2 safe system

FUT

During FUT procedures, a surgeon will harvest follicles by cutting a strip of flesh from the back of the head. This wound will be closed, though the patient will be left with a sizable scar for the rest of their life. If they want to keep their surgery discreet, the patient will be required to wear their hair in a longer style than they might choose to otherwise.

The strip of skin will be dissected, and the surgeon will implant the follicles into tiny incisions on the scalp.

FUE

FUE hair transplants are a more advanced, minimally invasive alternative to FUT procedures.

The surgeon will extract follicles from the back and sides of the head with a needle. That means the patient has no visible scar on the back of their head to cover up following their recovery.

The FUE2 SafeSystem is the most cutting-edge FUE hair transplant available. During FUE2 procedures, a doctor will utilise a high-precision micro punch to extract one graft at a time. This reduces the risk of follicles becoming damaged, and 95 to 100% of transplanted hairs will grow successfully.

HairPalace offers FUE2 hair restoration treatments in the UK and Hungary. Our highly competitive hair transplants in Budapest offer savings of up to 50% on standard UK prices.

FAQ

What is this?

WAY-316606 is a drug prescribed for patients living with osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become more fragile and susceptible to fractures. This can be an incredibly challenging condition, but WAY-316606 can help to reduce its effects.

How can it help hair loss problems?

Research shows that WAY-316606 may help to reduce hair loss and promote hair growth in patients. This is due to its ability to block SFRP1, a protein that inhibits the growth of hair follicles and other tissues. A team from the University of Manchester’s Centre for Dermatology Research treated human hair samples with WAY-316606, and found that it could help improve hair growth. Extensive further testing is required, though.

Is this the future for curing hair loss?

WAY-316606 (and similar options) have been linked with various side effects, including kidney issues. Much more research is required to determine whether WAY-316606 is a viable solution for hair loss over time.

Important information about baldness

What causes baldness?

If you’re starting to lose your hair, one or more factors may be responsible.

Male pattern baldness

Male pattern baldness (MPB) is one of the most common causes of hair loss: it’s an inherited condition that leaves men with a receding hairline and/or a thinning crown. This is due to a hormone known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Hair follicles tend to be particularly sensitive to this in men affected by MPB.

The follicles will become smaller over time, and hairs in the affected area(s) will stop growing eventually. If you want to speak with others experiencing male pattern baldness, you may find it helpful to share your experience on one of the many hair loss forums available online.

Telogen effluvium

Another cause of hair loss is telogen effluvium. This may occur around two to three months after a shock or extremely stressful situation (such as an accident, illness, etc.). The hair could grow back within two to six months of the occurrence.

Lack of nutrition

Failure to eat nutritious foods, or to get certain vitamins and minerals through other means, can be responsible for hair loss.

Protein, iron, zinc, vitamin A, and vitamin D are all important for hair growth.

Medication

Certain medications can trigger hair loss and eventual baldness. These include:

  • immunosuppressants
  • acne medications
  • antidepressants
  • blood pressure medications

However, hair loss may not always occur when taking these medications.

Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata is a condition causing the immune system to target healthy hair follicles by mistake. Hair may fall out in patches on the scalp, and possibly other areas of the body (such as the eyelashes).

Is it a normal occurrence?

Baldness can be a normal part of aging when a condition is inherited (e.g. male pattern baldness). It may be a family trait affecting most of the men or women in your family.

If baldness is the result of another cause, such as a medical condition or lack of nutrition, certain treatments may be able to help. If you’re concerned about changes in your hair growth, speak with a doctor to set your mind at ease.

What are the most common misconceptions about baldness?

Only men go bald

Women can experience hair loss and baldness too. Nine in 10 people looking for help with hair loss today are women, with stress highlighted as a common cause. The menopause, pregnancy, and polycystic ovary syndrome may be responsible too.

Baldness only affects older people

Baldness can affect men and women throughout their life, not just in old age. Male pattern baldness, for example, can start to develop during a man’s twenties or earlier.

Shampooing too much causes it

Washing your hair frequently does not cause baldness. But make sure you use quality products suited to your hair type, and try to cut back on heat-based styling tools.

How can baldness be treated?

Baldness can be treated in numerous ways. Minoxidil and finasteride are two of the most well-known options. However, these can be ineffective and require patients to use them consistently to maintain any resulting hair growth.

A hair transplant is the most effective hair restoration method, particularly the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique.

FUE involves extracting hair follicles from the scalp and implanting them into balding areas, whether on the crown or closer to the hairline. HairPalace’s surgeons use the FUE2 Safe System — the most advanced hair transplant technology available.

During FUE2 hair transplant procedures, a surgeon will transplant follicles using a high-precision micro punch. Between 95 – 100% of implanted hairs will grow back, and results look incredibly natural.

5* Service – Excited to see results!

Only just completed my procedure today but leading up to the op pretty much everything has been 5Star, from the communication prior to my intervention, the transport driver who was friendly and hotel accommodation which was situated in a very good location. The day of the procedure itself ran smoothly, the staff explain everything you need to know, you are given a decent meal to choose from and entertainment options to watch during the second phase of the actual implantation of the grafts. Of course I’ll have to wait and see how my implanted hairs grow in the next coming months but going from previous reviews I am really looking forward to my results and hopeful the procedure worked well for me. As my natural hairline has not receded as severe as other patients I am aware there may be further hair loss which was explained to me, so there is a possibility I could be back in the future.

Pascal’s second hair transplant – with 6000 hair!

$

Pascal started noticing hair loss when he was 35 years old.

At such a young age, he was not prepared to go bald: seeing how much the techniques have improved and the convincing results, he decided to go for a surgical hair restoration.

He had his first hair transplant carried out back in 2012; he had around 2000 hairs transplanted with the FUT (or strip) method.

With a FUT hair transplant, the surgeon cuts out a strip of scalp from the donor area at the back of the head. This strip is then dissected to smaller pieces to extract the hairs which are then implanted into the recipient area.

After the FUT, a long linear scar remains on the donor area and it takes around 14 days for the wound to heal.

His hair loss continued to progress after this first treatmen. As a result, a few years later he would have preferred more density at the front.

Pascal attended  our free hair transplant consultation in Marseille on the 9th of March 2016. He met one of our doctors who thoroughly checked his condition and discussed his needs:

Pascal’s hairline before the hair transplant surgery
Pascal’s hairline before the hair transplant surgery

For the optimal result, we recommended him 6000 to be transplanted with the FUE2 Safe System technique.

With the FUE2, the grafts are harvested one by one, so the procedure doesn’t leave visible scars, and the healing time reduces to 5-7 days.

We carried our Pascal’s hair transplant on the 24-25th of August 2016.

In total, he had 6316 hairs to build out a dense, defined hairline:

Post-op progress

Though the scalp heals quickly after the FUE2 hair transplant, the growth of the new hairs takes time.

We monitor the progress and have check-ups at the key stages of the process.

The first check-up is 7 days after the surgery.

In Pascal’s case, the doctor found everything in order:

There were still some scabs and some redness visible, but the implanted hairs were in place. There were no signs of inflammation or other disorders either:

Pascal 1 week hair implantation result
1 week after the surgery

The next check-up was 3 weeks after the treatment.

Based on the follow-up pictures, the healing progressed well.

The scabs had been soaked off properly, and there was noticeable growth which shows that the implanted hairs could anchor in:

Pascal 3 weeks after the hair transplant
3 weeks after the surgery

After the 3rd week, the implanted hairs fall out gradually as the roots enter a resting phase.

As a result, by the 3 months’ check-up  the condition looks almost the same as it was before the implantation in most cases.

The implanted area begins to change from the 4th post-op month as more and more hairs start to grow out.

The speed of the progress varies, but by the 6 months mark the change is already noticable, and some patients might already see a fairly good coverage:

Pascal 6 months after the treatment
Pascal 6 months after the treatment

It takes at least 12 months for the implanted area to reach the final result.

In Pascal’s case, we achieved a natural-looking and high density in the frontal zone:

Result 1 year after the surgery

„I am extremely satisfied with the result, I have the impression of having regained my hair almost from before.”

I was researching a lot to find a better and reliable place to do my hair transplantation and I finally found Hair Palace clinic which according to my experience is the best, affordable and reliable hair transplantation clinic in Europe, where I on the 19th of July did my hair transplantation and I have recieved 6180 hairs (2350 grafts). I would just say that it is an amazing place. The place is very clean, and the staff are very friendly and professional, and they made everything perfect and convenient for me. Everything was well planned, and I got every bit of information regarding my travel and hair transplantation. The accommodation which was provided to me was very clean and located in the center of Budapest. I am so glad that I chose this clinic for my hair transplantation and I am also planning to come back next summer to get the next phase of my hair transplantation done, where I will get hair transplantation in the occipital region of my head. So, I would without doubt give them 5 out of 5 stars and I will give my second review after I get the result of my hair transplantation.

Receding hairline: symptoms, stages, causes, and treatment options

“I used to ask my mom to try and shave my head on the sides to give me a receding hairline because Adam Ant had one.”

Paul Rudd, Actor

If you have a receding hairline, how old were you when you first noticed it?

A poll revealed that 27% of men affected by hair loss started to see their hairline creeping back between the age 26 and 30 years old. Just over 20% experienced it several years earlier, and 5% reached their forties before their hairline began to recede.

Women may also be affected, particularly as they grow older, and cases of frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) have become more widely reported in recent years.

But no matter how old you are when it hits, a receding hairline can be incredibly difficult to accept — as with most signs of aging.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce the visibility of your receding hairline and even restore it to a more youthful condition.

We’ll explore all the key facts, contributing factors, and treatment options below.

What are the symptoms of a receding hairline?

The hairline usually starts to recede above the temples. You may notice that your hairline looks uneven or forms a “M” shape.

If it stops here, this may be just a mature hairline, which most men develop between their late teens and thirties.

But if the hair continues to move back along the top of the head, this is what we commonly consider a receding hairline.

The receding hairline of James Nesbitt

A widow’s peak may form as the hairline recedes above the temples but retains a patch in the middle of the forehead. This is a “V” shape that many men sport, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson.

Mature hairline Leonardo DiCaprio

In some cases, the hairline may recede to the middle of the scalp and leave a patch at the back, while the sides remain unaffected. Or the entire top of the head will become bald, leaving only the back and sides.

For some men, the hairline will recede but leave an island of thinning hair near the front of the scalp.

What causes the problem?

A receding hairline may be caused by:

Genetics

Sadly, if the men and women in your family are affected by receding hairlines, thinning hair, and/or baldness, you’re highly likely to experience it too.

This can be a tough fact to live with, especially if you take pride in your hair. But discussing hair loss with relatives might help you understand the process a little better, and perhaps even worry about it less.

Hormone fluctuations

Hormonal changes cause receding hairlines in men and women. They may be triggered by:

  • pregnancy
  • thyroid problems
  • menopause
  • medication

Scalp infections

A scalp infection may affect hair growth and cause the hairline to recede. It’s possible that hair growth will return to its former condition following treatment.

Medications

Certain medications or supplements can contribute to a receding hairline. These include treatments prescribed for gout, high blood pressure, cancer, and depression.

Illness

Illnesses can disrupt the hair growth cycle and prevent new hairs replacing those that shed naturally. This may affect the hair on different areas of the scalp, including around the hairline.

Contributing illnesses may include autoimmune disorders, such as alopecia areata or lupus.

What factors accelerate a receding hairline?

The following factors can accelerate a receding hairline:

Stress

Experiencing high stress for a prolonged period can lead to hair loss, which may manifest as a receding hairline.

This could be due to marital issues, difficulties at work, family worries, financial challenges, or anything else that weighs on your mind.

Poor diet

A lack of nutrition may contribute to a receding hairline. For example, protein is essential for sustaining healthy hair growth, as are:

  • iron
  • zinc
  • vitamin A
  • vitamin C
  • vitamin D
  • B-vitamins

Excessive styling

Anyone who styles their hair too vigorously may damage it and increase their risk of shedding, including a receding hairline. Relying on curling irons, blow dryers, and other heat-related tools can have a negative effect on hair over time.

How is the problem diagnosed?

If you speak to your doctor about your receding hairline, they will likely advise you to discuss the issue with a dermatologist.

They will explore your personal medical history, and that of your family, to understand more about what may be causing your receding hairline. It could be that your hair loss is down to genetics if other men or women in your family have experienced it too.

The dermatologist will probably perform the “pull test” to examine the extent of your hair loss. This is quick and simple: they will pull on multiple hairs to see how many detach from the scalp.

They will also undertake a biopsy of scalp tissue or hairs to identify a physical cause, such as an infection. You may have a blood test to rule out certain issues, such as thyroid disease.

Ultimately, a dermatologist should help you understand why your hairline is receding, and if you can expect further hair loss or scalp problems.

What are the treatment options for a receding hairline?

A number of treatment options for a receding hairline are available:

Medications

Medications may be required to treat physical conditions responsible for your hair loss (e.g. immune disorders). In this case, a doctor will assess your health and prescribe the necessary medications, which may or may not have an effect on your hairline.

If your receding hairline isn’t linked to a physical illness, you may be advised to try minoxidil. This is a topical treatment applied to the scalp, with an aim to stimulate hair growth in one or more areas.

It may cause scalp irritation, and even if it achieves a positive change in your hairline, you would need to keep using the minoxidil to retain growth.

Another common option is finasteride, formulated to promote healthier hair growth by reducing the amount of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in your body (DHT is commonly linked to hair loss).

However, finasteride may have some complex side effects, including:

  • difficulties getting or maintaining an erection
  • decrease in sex drive
  • facial swelling
  • skin rashes
  • ejaculation issues

Surgery

Hair restoration surgery is one of the most popular and effective solutions for a receding hairline. You may multiple options to consider:

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

During a FUT procedure, a surgeon will remove a strip of skin from the back of the head and dissect it into tiny pieces. They will harvest its hair follicles and implant them into areas affected by hair loss (the hairline, in this case).

FUT is more of an outdated hair transplant technique today. Removing a strip of flesh leaves a large visible scar, and you may need to wear your hair in a longer style to cover it in the future.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

FUE is a more advanced hair transplant method than FUT. Your surgeon will extract hair follicles from donor areas (the back and sides of the head) in smaller quantities, using a fine needle to reduce the visibility of scarring. These are implanted into the hairline to create new growth.

FUE2 hair restoration for receding hairline

HairPalace’s surgeons use the cutting-edge FUE2 SafeSystem technology for all hair transplants, including targeting receding hairlines. We’ll extract grafts one by one with a high-precision micro punch, and implant them with the same device. Between 95 – 100% of implanted hairs will grow back.

Can you predict how far a hairline will recede?

Predicting how far a hairline will recede is incredibly difficult. However, you may be able to make a fair prediction by looking at your parents, grandparents, and siblings.

If their hairlines have receded in a similar way, it’s likely (but not guaranteed) that yours will end up in the same condition too.

FAQ

What causes the problem?

A receding hairline may be caused by genetics, hormone changes, illness, stress, poor diet, scalp infections, and medications. Some of these may be treated or eased, e.g. finding ways to decrease stress levels, eating a healthier diet containing more nutritious foods, etc.

What are the most common symptoms?

The most common symptoms of a receding hairline are the loss of hair above the temples, and the development of a “M” shape. For men or women with a widow’s peak, the hairline may start to form a “V” shape instead. The extent to which a hairline recedes can vary from one person to another. It may develop into a bald scalp, while the back and sides remain unaffected.

Can it be stopped?

You may take certain steps to stop a receding hairline, such as changing your diet, lowering stress levels, taking medications. But for some people, a hair transplant is the most effective way to restore the hairline and achieve more youthful growth. This involves taking healthy hair follicles from other areas of the scalp and implanting them into the hairline.

Two hair transplants, 12 000 hairs, a brand new look – Peter’s hair transplant

Peter first contacted us in the spring of 2015.

He explained that he had been unhappy with the density of his hair at the hairline and the crown area. To assess his needs and options for a hair restoration, we invited him to an in-person consultation.

During the 15-20 minute examination we determined the number of hairs he needed for the result he expected and we prepared him a treatment plan tailored to his needs. We proposed him 7000 hairs to achieve the perfect hair transplant result.

Peter's consultation before his FUE2 hair transplant
Peter at our consultation before the hair transplant

Before the surgery we asked him to send us a blood report. The doctors need to check a couple test results so we can prevent complications during the procedure.

Peter arranged the blood tests on his own, but our colleagues are happy to help and book you an appointment with our partner laboratory if you prefer.

Peter’s blood report came back perfect. We asked him to avoid using hair styling products (gels, mousse, hair spray) taking Vitamin-D, drinking alcohol and smoking in the 2 days prior to the surgery.

Peter’s FUE2 hair transplant

We carried out his surgery on the 19th of May at our clinic in Budapest under Lechner Ödön fasor 3.

We use the FUE2 (follicular unit extraction) hair transplant method which is the most modern and the most effective solution currently.

Instead of removing strips of the scalp to extract the hairs, with this technique we harvest the follicular units one by one.

The hairs are extracted from the back of the head – after cleaning them properly, we implant them to the areas affected by hair loss.

During the surgery Peter received local anaesthesia then we extracted the hairs with a drill ending in a special, very fine needle.

Then, the hairs were put in their new place in the thinned out areas with an even finer needle.

Peter's FUE2 hair transplantation
Peter had 3800 hairs implanted to the hairline, and 3350 hairs to the crown

In total, we transplanted 7014 hairs during the 2-day procedure.

Peter took the surgery well and left the clinic satisfied with the experience.

Dos and don’ts after the hair transplant

A few hours after the hair transplant, patients must remove the bandage from the donor area.

They must start using the sterile saline solution too – a couple sprays every hour during the day to keep the implanted area hydrated.

It’s crucial to let the healing go undisturbed, so the implanted hairs can anchor in.

We informed Peter too that before the surgery that he cannot touch or rub the freshly implanted area for the first post-op week.

In addition, we asked him to inform us if he would like to use any products not approved by the clinic (e.g. aloe vera gel, skin repairing creams)

While these products can help accelerate surface healing, they are not recommended in all cases.

The result of the hair transplant takes months to fully evolve; as such, we follow the patient’s healing and the growth of the new hairs for a year after the surgery.

The first weeks after the surgery

Peter had his first check-up a week after the procedure.

We found everything in order; he followed our instructions carefully, so there was no inflammation or infection.

At this point, the scabs are still on the scalp, however, from day 7 patients must start soaking them off the implanted area.

It is best to soak the scalp carefully in lukewarm water for 15-20 minutes, before applying a gentle massage to remove the softened scabs.

Peter just one week after his hair transplant
1 week after the surgery

Using shampoo in the first 2 weeks might cause irritation; consequently, patients may start using baby shampoo from the 3rd post-op week.

Check-ups 3 weeks and 3 months after the surgery

Three weeks after the hair transplant Peter’s scalp was in great condition, he removed all scabs properly.

The implanted hairs have started to fall out, but he had no reason to worry – most patients go through this process. The hair strands fall out at this point because the implanted roots enter the resting phase of the growth cycle.

We had the next check-up with Peter 3 months after his treatment.

We saw nice regrowth on the implanted area and Peter was happy with the improvement too.

Peter 3 weeks after his hair transplant
Three weeks after the procedure

One year after the hair transplant

We guarantee the success of the surgeries, so if less than 80% of the implanted hairs grow back in 15 months, we reimplant the missing amount free of charge.

Peter had his 1-year check-up on the 21st of June 2016.

The implanted hairs have grown out perfectly, just as planned and Peter achieved a great result.

We examined both the donor and the implanted areas again, making sure that his scalp healed properly.

We took photos this time as well to document his condition and Peter was happy to take a closer look at his hair before and after the hair transplant. He noted that later on he would like to return to further increase the density at the crown area.

Peter's 1 year hair implantation result
Hair transplant result a year after the surgery

The second consultation and hair transplant

A few years later, in January 2019, we welcomed Peter back at the clinic to discuss his second hair transplant.

The consultation went smoothly, we discussed and marked the area he wished to treat and we determined the number of hairs he needed.

We scheduled Peter second FUE2 hair transplant to the 6th of February.

This session took 2 days to complete – this way we could ensure the comfort of our patient while we implanted a larger number of hairs.

Peter's 2nd FUE2 treatment
During his 2nd treatment Peter got 5096 hairs

We used local anaesthesia this time too, so Peter didn’t experience any discomfort during the surgery.

We implanted 4646 hairs to the crown, and improved the triangles on the sides of the hairline with 450 hairs.

Through his check-ups we made sure that Peter’s healing goes well.

Fewer scabs formed on the scalp after the surgery, since we transplanted fewer hairs than the first time.

The density started to visibly improve at the 4-month mark and on the 10th of February 2020 we were happy to see Peter again with a brand new look.

He told us he is rather satisfied with his thicker mane and thanked the team for the great work.

Let’s take a look at Peter’s transformation:

Dense hairline, energetic look – Maxim’s hair transplant

$

In the summer of 2017 a young man contacted our clinic.

The 31-years-old Maxim told us he can’t ignore his thinning hairline anymore.

We explained that experiencing hair loss is not a unique thing at his age. Genetics and hormones are largely responsible for it and we’ve had several cases when men started to lose their hair in their early 20s.

During our 15-20 minutes long consultation we closely examined our patient’s area of concern. We saw that his hairline’s crawled up and the density of the front has reduced over the years.

Maxim would’ve loved to get this area filled up, so we drew a plan for his new hairline together.

Once he was satisfied with the rough shape and position, we told him that he needs at least 5000 new hairs to achieve the look.

Maxim's consultation before hair transplant
Maxim’s thinning front before his surgery

Once Maxim was sure that we can help, he booked the date of his hair transplant at our Budapest hair clinic.

In the months leading up to his surgery, we arranged his accommodation and airport transfers and made sure that he received all the necessary information.

Before the procedure, we always need a blood test result from the past 3 months to exclude possible complications. Our patients are free to arrange them themselves but we can also book you an appointment at our partner laboratory. Maxim sent us his results in advance – as his results were great, we could confirm that the surgery can go ahead as planned.

Maxim’s FUE2 transplantation

We performed Maxim’s hair transplant surgery on the 7 and 8th of October 2017.

As Maxim needed 5196 hairs to increase the density at the front, the surgery had to take 2 days to complete.

For each procedure, we use the FUE2 Safe System technique. This means, that we transplant existing hairs from the donor area (usually the nape) to the treated area one by one.

The whole procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia to make sure our patient won’t feel any pain.

Maxim's FUE2 hair restoration
In this picture we can see the implanted area right after the surgery

After the surgery

In the first period, the scalp must be treated carefully.

For seven days after the operation, nothing can touch the implanted area except the sterile saline solution.

Patients must avoid drastic weather conditions (such as extreme sunshine and cold) or using chemicals. These steps are important so the scalp can heal and the new hairs can anchor in properly.

In the 12 months following the hair transplant,  we have check-up examinations regularly. This way, we can follow the healing and the new hair growth step by step.

The first check-up is after the first week.

Maxim in the first week after his FUE2 transplant
Scabs form on both the recipient and the donor areas

Maxim told us he followed the rules and instructions carefully. And his photos attested to that  – there were no infection or inflammation.

The scabs were there, so we explained to him how he can start removing them.  At this point, patients have to soak the scalp in lukewarm water (under the shower, or in the bathtub), so the scabs soften up.  Then, they have to gently massage through the scalp to help them come off.

Three weeks and three months post-op

All scabs must be removed by the third week. Then, patients can start using baby shampoo to wash their hair.

Around the 3-weeks mark, the transplanted hairs start to fall out, often scaring patients. But, there’s no need to worry as this is a part of the regular process. The reason why this happens is that the hair-bulbs enter the resting phase of their life cycle. This period lasts for a couple of months – the new growth usually starts around the 4th post-op month.

Maxim in the 3rd month after the surgery
The third month after the surgery

We checked Maxim’s condition 3 months after the surgery. He told us that although many new hairs started to grow, there are still empty areas at the front.

We assured him, that the implanted area progresses very well and he should see more growth in the next months.

Maxim visited us for his 6 months’ check-up in April. He was glad to see how much his front has changed. We were happy to find everything in order, and see how dense his hair looked.

A year after the surgery

After the surgery, it takes at least 12 months for all the transplanted hairs to grow.

This is when we have the last check-up to take a look at the condition of the hairs and the scalp.

Maxim's 1 year FUE2 result
Maxim’s hairline after a year

Maxim sent us photos so we could properly assess the regrowth.

We saw that his hair transplant was an overwhelming success, the implanted hairs have grown out well.

Over the phone, Maxim told us that he finds the result astonishing. His confidence returned, and he was happy with how wonderful his hairline turned to be.

Great for hair transplant

I found Hair Palace Budapest to be amazing for the hair transplant. The staffs and the surgeon were very helpful and easy to communicate with. I had lots of concerns before undergoing surgery and they were able to address it properly. They arranged the accommodation and pickup and drop off to the airport which was very helpful. I have just done my hair-transplants and its hard to say about the results now. The surgery went smoothly and I am looking forward to the new hair in my head! I will provide the review regarding the results in few months time.

Norwood scale: how can you classify your baldness?

Struggling with male pattern baldness?

It’s not easy for any man, at any age. You might think that nobody understands what you’re going through, but many people know exactly what you’re going through.

And that’s because this condition is the most common form of baldness in men, responsible for around 95 percent of male hair loss.

Numerous celebrities have experienced male pattern baldness, including Jude Law.

male pattern baldness actor Jude Law

And you can measure the extent of your male pattern baldness with the classic Norwood scale. This will help you determine how your hairline may continue to change over time, and to understand what treatments could work for you.

What is the Norwood scale?

James Hamilton created the Norwood scale in the early 1950s, based on extensive research into male pattern baldness. He monitored the progression of hair loss in more than 300 men, and charted a common progression in the condition.

O’Tar Norwood later revised and updated the scale in the ‘70s, which is why it’s sometimes referred to as the Hamilton-Norwood or Norwood-Hamilton scale.

The scale is a simple visual reference tool for men experiencing hair loss, doctors, and hair transplant surgeons.

They can show patients a clear overview of their hair loss, indicate the level of baldness they’re likely to develop in the future, and discuss possible treatments.

What are the seven stages of baldness in the Norwood scale?

There are seven stages of baldness in the Norwood scale. They chart the full progression of male pattern baldness, from initial recession to extreme hair loss across most of the scalp.

Stage 1

1st stage baldness in the norwood stage

The first stage in the Norwood scale shows no significant hairline recession or hair loss anywhere on the scalp.

Men classified as being at this stage may or may not experience baldness later in life. You should be able to tell if you’re at stage 1 by checking your hair and scalp in the mirror.

Stage 2

2nd stage baldness in the norwood stage

The second stage of the Norwood scale indicates subtle hair loss, which may or may not progress to more severe male pattern baldness.

This hair shedding occurs around the temples, and can create an ‘M’ shape in the hairline (or a ‘V’ in men with a widow’s peak). This is known as a mature hairline.

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio has a pronounced mature hairline, for example:

Leoonardo DiCaprio mature hairline

Men may start to develop a mature hairline in their late teens, throughout their twenties, and beyond. But some may keep their youthful hairline for many years after.

Your hair loss might go unnoticed at stage 2, and you could minimise its visibility by adjusting your hairstyle to cover the shedding around the temples.

Stage 3

3rd stage baldness in the norwood stage

Men at stage 3 on the Norwood scale have more pronounced hair loss around the temples, and the hairline will recess further along the scalp.

However, there’s also a sub-stage, known as stage three vertex. This applies to a bald patch forming on the crown of the scalp while the front remains in stage 2 or 3.

Hair loss may be harder to cover in this case.

Stage 4

4th stage baldness in the norwood stage

By the time a man reaches stage 4 on the Norwood scale, the hairline recession is significantly more visible. This typically includes baldness at the front and on the vertex.

The hair between both affected areas may still be as dense as before. You might start to consider hair treatment at this point, though it’s important that you consult a specialist before you make plans.

You may not be a suitable candidate if your hair is likely to keep shedding.

Stage 5

5th stage baldness in the norwood stage

At the fifth stage on the Norwood scale, your hairline has receded around halfway along the scalp. The bald patch on the vertex/crown is also bigger.

You may develop an island of hair at the front of the scalp, separated from the rest of the hair or connected by a thin strip.

Men at this stage could choose to leave their hair as it is, or cut it close to the scalp to create a more cohesive look.

Stage 6

6th stage baldness in the norwood stage

For men at stage 6 on the Norwood scale, hair loss has affected most of the scalp. The bald vertex patch and the receding hairline will almost join, separated only by a narrow strip of hair.

If you had an island of hair near the front of your scalp in previous stages, this may have been shed too.

Stage 7

7th stage baldness in the norwood stage

Stage 7 is the most advanced stage of hair loss on the Norwood scale. You’ll usually have just a thin band of hair around the scalp, while the hair on the lower back and sides of the head will be unaffected.

Again, men at this stage may shave their head to be completely bald, wear a hairpiece, or seek treatment at a hair clinic.

When should you see a hair loss specialist?

You should see a hair loss specialist when you start to feel concerned about your receding hairline or thinning at the vertex.

There’s no real need to see a specialist at the first two stages on the Norwood scale. Slight hair loss will create a mature hairline, but there’s no guarantee that you’ll develop male pattern baldness later on.

However, it is a possibility if other men in your family have experienced the condition. In this case, a hair loss specialist may tell you to be on the lookout for further signs of shedding and invite you to return to their clinic at a later date.

Certain medical conditions are known to trigger hair loss, such as:

  • scalp infections
  • hormonal changes
  • poor nutrition
  • physical or emotional stress
  • an autoimmune disorder

However, specialists will usually find male pattern baldness easy to diagnose and quickly rule out other possible causes.

How is male pattern baldness diagnosed?

A hair loss specialist or a dermatologist will be able to diagnose male pattern baldness by examining your scalp, usually under magnification.

They will look for common signs of the condition, such as a receding hairline and/or thinning on the crown.

An expert will also discuss your medical background, and ask about hair loss within your family. As male pattern baldness is hereditary, this can be one of the fastest ways to reach an accurate diagnosis.

When diagnosing male pattern baldness, a specialist will consult the Norwood scale to determine the extent of hair loss you’ve experienced so far, and to indicate how it may continue.

How can baldness be treated?

Baldness can be treated in a number of ways. Some are temporary, others are permanent.

Minoxidil and finasteride are two of the most common hair loss treatments.

However, if they actually stimulate hair growth in affected areas, you must continue using them to retain the results.

This means either applying topical minoxidil to your scalp or ingesting a pill for the rest of your life.

Alternatively, a hair transplant is a more effective, convenient, and permanent option.

Two types of hair transplant procedure are available: Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

FUE is the more advanced of the two. This is a minimally invasive treatment capable of restoring hair growth across the scalp with incredible precision.

For example, legendary Italian footballer Antonio Conte looks fantastic following his most recent hair transplant.

Antonio Conte before and after FUE2 hair transplant

You can learn more about the latest hair transplant procedures here.

Is it possible to have a successful hair transplant at the later stages of the Norwood scale?

You can have a hair transplant at any stage of the Norwood scale, even the later ones, if you have healthy hair around the back and sides of your head.

Why? Because a surgeon will extract hair follicles from these areas and implant them into those parts of the scalp affected by baldness.

In the case of a cutting-edge FUE2 SafeSystem procedure, this process will involve removing and implanting them with a high-precision micro punch device.

You can see multiple examples of FUE2’s remarkable results below:

However, it’s possible that your hair loss will continue even after a transplant — unless you wait for your male pattern baldness to “run its course”.

This can be a difficult decision to make, but allowing your hair to shed across the entire scalp will reduce the need to undergo subsequent procedures in future.

If you think a hair transplant is the right option for you, book a consultation with an expert. They’ll take the time to examine your hair loss, and help you make an informed decision about your treatment.

Scalp micropigmentation: everything you need to know about it

$

Scalp micropigmentation is just one option to consider if you want to tackle your hair loss.

But what is it? How does the process work? And what results would you expect to see if you tried it?

In this post, we’ll explore everything you need to know about scalp micropigmentation, to help you find the right hair restoration solution for your goals.

What is scalp micropigmentation?

Scalp micropigmentation is a cosmetic treatment designed to create the impression of thicker, fuller hair.

It involves no surgery or transplantation, which may immediately seem appealing if you’re concerned about undergoing a more complex procedure. But scalp micropigmentation does NOT achieve real growth like a hair transplant does.

Instead, a trained professional will essentially “draw” hair onto the scalp by implanting pigment with a handheld device.

This may be applied to one or more areas of the scalp to cover up signs of baldness. Different hues are available to suit diverse hair and skin colours.

micropigmentation with an electric tattoo device

Scalp micropigmentation shares similarities with microblading, which has become a hugely popular way to enhance the appearance of eyebrows.

But scalp micropigmentation is a more comprehensive treatment, performed with an electric tattoo device (due to the power required to penetrate the epidermal layer).

It also covers a wider area of skin than microblading, which is restricted to the eyebrows only.

Who is scalp micropigmentation for?

Scalp micropigmentation is suitable for a wide range of people, including those losing hair due to:

  • cancer treatment (e.g. chemotherapy)
  • alopecia
  • male or female pattern baldness (beginning with a receding hairline and/or baldness at the crown)
  • thinning hair

Scalp micropigmentation can transform your appearance: it suggests that you have healthy hair growth but have chosen to shave it close to the skin.

Can micropigmentation be a solution for hair loss?
Source: Hairline Ink

It may be particularly useful if you have a mild receding hairline (or a mature hairline) and want to make it appear lower. Or if you want people to think that your short hair is a personal choice rather the result of a medical condition.

How does it work, and does it hurt?

During the scalp micropigmentation process, a specific pigment is injected just below the scalp to imply the presence of hair where it no longer grows.

A high-precision device essentially tattoos the pigment onto the head, positioning tiny dots in large quantities to create an illusion of density.

In fact, if you have tattoos anywhere on your body, the procedure may seem familiar. The pigment will be applied to follow the natural pattern of your hair follicles.

A consultation is typically required before the procedure.

This enables an expert to assess your scalp and hair loss, before explaining the results you should expect to see. It also gives you an opportunity to ask questions and address any concerns you might have.

You might not be a suitable candidate for scalp micropigmentation if you have psoriasis or are prone to keloid scarring, as it may be too difficult to successfully apply pigment to the target areas.

On the day of the procedure, a topical agent will be applied to numb the relevant areas of the scalp (e.g. the crown, the hairline) first. But it’s possible that you might still experience some discomfort during the treatment.

Again, if you have one or more tattoos, you may know what to expect once the process begins.

How many treatments are required?

You may require multiple treatments to achieve your ideal results.

Each one will likely last around four to five hours, though lengths can vary from one case to the next.

The number of treatments you need will depend on the amount of scalp involved.

A smaller area (such as a patch near the front) may be finished within three or four treatments, though more will be necessary for bigger areas.

The first treatment will typically focus on laying a foundation. Subsequent sessions will add further layers, to achieve the shade and coverage required.

Treatments will be separated by a few weeks. These intervals give the scalp time to heal.

When will you see results?

You will see immediate results from scalp micropigmentation: the pigment is applied directly to the skin, so you can see the treatment taking shape during the procedure.

Hair tattoo result
Source: Complete Micropigmentation

However, as the first treatment usually centres on laying a foundation upon which to build during future sessions, you may be surprised by how light the pigmentation appears at first.

What should you pay attention to after the treatment?

Certain precautions will be recommended after your scalp micropigmentation, depending on your personal circumstances.

Measures may include:

  • avoiding swimming for a set period
  • avoiding strenuous exercise for a number of days
  • staying out of steam rooms and saunas for around one month
  • moisturising your scalp between treatments
  • staying out of the sun for around one month (and using a high-SPF sunscreen after this period)

You’ll be provided with more specific instructions before and after your treatment.

Does scalp micropigmentation have further benefits?

Scalp micropigmentation offers further benefits than simply reducing the effects of hair loss. It can also be used to conceal birthmarks, scars, and burns on the head.

How much does scalp micropigmentation cost?

The cost of scalp micropigmentation varies depending on:

  • the size of the treatment areas (whole scalp, crown, etc.)
  • whether you have scars, burns, or birthmarks to cover
  • the number of sessions required to achieve your desired look
  • the clinic, its team, and location

Price is one of the most important factors to consider. You may be presented with a competitive rate for a single session, but these will add up over time.

It’s crucial that you confirm the full price for your course of treatments before you choose a particular clinic.

Generally, though, you may be able to undergo scalp micropigmentation targeting the hairline or crown for less than £700.

The cost will rise as more and more coverage is required: if the entire top of your head is bald but you still have healthy growth around the back and sides, you could find a treatment for around £1000 or less.

Covering burns and scars can be more complex, so prices for these treatments will be higher.

How long does scalp pigmentation last?

Scalp micropigmentation does NOT achieve permanent results.

Typically, the pigments injected into your scalp could remain visible for close to a decade — but they will fade dramatically during this time.

You may even start to see reduced visibility after around four to six years following your final treatment.

Why? Because the skin will naturally exfoliate itself, and fading could be accelerated if you have dry, flaking skin. The colour may grow lighter too.

You’ll need to keep undergoing touch-up sessions every three to six years to maintain quality results.

This is why you should think carefully before you decide whether or not to try scalp micropigmentation.

It’s an ongoing commitment: you may be required to schedule treatments every few years for the rest of your life if you want to keep the pigment at its best.

Considering the costs involved, scalp micropigmentation can become more expensive than you may expect over time.

Other hair loss treatments are available, and may be a better option if you want to restore your hair growth.

Hair transplant surgery is the most effective solution: it can restore growth in bald/thinning areas with permanent results.

It doesn’t simply cover up hair loss — it implants your own donor follicles into your scalp to cultivate new, seamless growth.

Once your transplant is complete and your hair grows back across the following 12 to 18 months, you may never need another treatment.

Are there any risks or side effects of the treatment?

Scalp micropigmentation does involve a degree of risk.

One of the biggest potential issues is choosing the wrong practitioner.

Effective training is essential to handle the electric tattoo device with maximum accuracy, and to follow the scalp’s follicular pattern to achieve a natural look.

Other possible risks and side effects include:

  • allergic reactions to the pigment/ink
  • injury caused by the needle (particularly a risk with insufficient training or experience)

Scalp micropigmentation can help people living with certain conditions or looking to enhance the appearance of their hair in small ways, such as filling in the hairline.

However, hair restoration procedures (such as FUE) can restore full hair growth — providing a more effective solution.

Hair Transplant, look no further

Have just left the clinic following the last 2 days of a Procedure. Have been looking into a hair transplant for the last year or so now, a few friends had been over to Turkey and spoke highly of it but something was tugging at me not to go to Turkey. I started to have a look at other places and stumbled across HairPalace by pure chance. Being from Manchester, UK I had seen a few reviews by UK citizens. I had a consultation with Dr Sandor Tar in Manchester in July and he ran through what realistically could be done, I was going very thin with a waving hair line at the front and the back had completely gone. I opted for the 6000 hairs package to restore the front and give me a straight hair line once again. I arranged and booked the treatment through Bettina and arrived in Budapest on 16th October. The pick up from the airport was ok, there was an issue with the original driver so I had to ring Hair Palace in order to see what was happening and another driver was sent. The apartment was spot on, about 2.5km walk from the centre (but if you walk along the river you can see the many sights). Treatment began at about 930am on the first day due to the paperwork and haircut you receive (I grew my hair out in preparation for the trip but I needn’t have bothered as they shave your head completely bald before anything is done). Completely reiterated to myself why I was having the procedure when I stood and looked at a bald man in the mirror. The facilities are fantastic, clean and modern. I had to get changed into their own clothes, your given a T-shirt, linen pants and some sort of flip flops to wear. I wouldn’t say the procedure is painless, if you can stomach injections and tattoos with no real issue you will be fine. The injections are just quick short stabs into the back of your head. Hair is then taken and put into ice. Later on after dinner (great choice of food) I went back in to have the incisions into my head for the hairs to be implanted. I’m not going to lie, The injections across the front of the head do sting a little. The surgery it’s self is painless but the injections aren’t My translators were Balina for day 1 and Barbara for Day 2. Both were excellent. Doctor was Erika who was brilliant and patient. If she was working on an area which was sensitive she would put another injection on. All in all very impressed with the service, accomodation, facilities, staff, procedure and price. I’ll be going back next year for part 2….!

My review, before, during and afterwards

Being continuously aware of my hair thinning issue, I decided to get something done. Why did I decide on HairPalace? Not sure really, just google searches and looking at reviews. Wasn’t the absolute cheapest, but seemed exactly what I needed and they always responded quickly to my emails. Attended an office in London which is a rented office. In a way, this was good – I didn’t want to see plush offices in the UK when they are based in Hungary – plush offices mean money, which inevitably I would be paying for! I paid for 6000 hairs, which is the max I could do. Had to get some lumps on my scalp removed first (which took 6 months! Eventually found someone in the UK that didn’t charge over £1000 to remove 3 small lumps!!). Anyway, revisited the London HairPalace office and was told I was good to go. Arrangements were thorough, I knew exactly where to be and what to expect. Was picked up from airport by a private company – the driver was a bit of a miserable person! Was taken to an apartment which was about 45 minute trip from airport. Next day, was picked up by the same private transportation company, very friendly driver this time who dropped me at a blood test place (20 minutes drive from apartment). Blood test took 15 mins, then the rest of the day was spare. TREATMENT DAY ONE Next day, walked from apartment to clinic (20 minute walk, if that). Nice offices with friendly staff. They explained procedure, obviously they took the payment (else this would be a non-starter!) then shaved my hair bald! In the treatment room, first I was face down while they extracted hair follicles from the back, then side of my head. After being stabbed many many times with anaesthetic, the only sensation was this buzzing which was similar to a bee drilling around every follicle, then each one being removed with tweezers. Today they moved follicles from the back and right-hand side. Extraction took about 1 hour. Now the same process to the top of my head but in reverse – the hair that was once at the back of my head was now on the top of my head! Watched a couple of films during this time, with a break for lunch. Lunch was provided, but I was disappointed with myself for not noticing the pizza choice!! Instead I had a very large club-sandwich with chicken inside. Treatment started about 10am, left about 4pm. That night, had a bandage over the back part of my head. The blanket bandage they gave me become stuck to my head with the blood, not a pretty site but what do you expect with a hair transplant! Was kind of difficult to sleep, but got through it ok. DAY TWO of the treatment, I was offered an extra 1000 hairs as the quality of my hair gave me this option. Paid another £300 for an extra 1000 so that my hair line would go back further. Same as yesterday, extract hair from back of head, plant in top of head. You cannot feel anything, as your whole head is numbed with the anaesthetic. The only pain, was being sat in a chair with a neck pillow for about 3-4 hours. The aching around my neck was almost unbearable, but in the end it’s just something you have to deal with! At the end of day 2, VERY PLEASED. Although this was ‘fresh out of the clinic’, my head was red and bloody, AT LAST I have a head of hair! Very spikey! There are many rules, such as you cannot touch, wash, cover your head for the first week. Pills to take every day for the first week, etc. I had the miserable driver back to the airport, who didn’t like it when I picked up my own bag to put in the van. Maybe it was just a translation issue, but his reaction to be honest angered me as he appeared to go into the van and I didn’t know if I should put my bags in the van or him. He came back and instead of saying “please don’t worry I will do it”, he said “no, leave the bags, this is MY job” with a very unfriendly and angry tone. Purposely didn’t make eye contact with him on way back to airport which wasn’t difficult. On the plane I was a very proud person, until I looked at my face in the mirror and realised that the anaesthetic that had been injected all around my head over the past 2 days had inflated my head and I looked deformed! Just the natural procedure but it was a shock! Next day I woke up, now the front of my face was bulging and was a struggle to open my eyes, so it’s essential to take some time off work so that the anaesthetic works its way through. This went away after about 3 days. Nothing major, just was a bit of a shock lol. First week, VERY SCABBY! When the skin on your head moves, thousands of scabs move. Very funny sensation (nice to start with) then it comes back to bite you with a sting. Nothing to worry about, was just weird! Clinic also request weekly photos, to make sure that I’ve kept to the rules and advise me on progress. End of first week, the scabs are now moving along each hair! Thousands of them! And the back of your head, a scab per hair that was removed! Yuck! But again, what do you expect!? You’ve just had a transplant! Second week, water only, no scrubbing. Most scabs came off by the end of the week. I’m now at the 1.5 month period. About 75% of the transplanted hairs look like they have gone, which is all part of the cycle. My head looks like it did before I went out there, although slightly better). The hairs will regrow after the 3rd month. Only at 6 months will I get an idea of what it will look like in the future – again, all as per the plan, so it’s just a matter of being patient to see the real results. Currently, I can “feel” things are happening on my head! It’s like someone has placed a warm flannel on my head and left it there! Nice, tingling sensations! All in all, “as expected”. Very good service, staff, and always responded to my emails either the same day or the next. Definitely recommended and I’m looking forward to seeing what my hair looks like when the new follicles come back through in a couple of months.

The truth behind David Beckham’s hair regrowth

David Beckham has transcended the fame he earned as a footballer to become an icon in his own right.

He’s packed a wealth of amazing achievements into his life so far, despite still being some years away from 50. We all know he was a star player with Manchester United, but he also showed his remarkable talent on the pitch with Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, and England’s national squad.

But for many fans, a common talking point remains David Beckham hair regrowth.

Did he really start to lose his hair in recent years? Did he undergo a hair transplant to restore his locks? And if so, which transplant type did he choose?

We’ll try to answer these, and other, questions below!

What did David Beckham’s hair look like?

Over the years, Beckham has sported a number of eye-catching hairstyles. In the late ‘90s, he was known for a then-popular look also associated with hit-making boybands, such as Backstreet Boys and Westlife.

He soon traded this in for a buzzcut, before landing on the style that made a splash in the early 2000s: vibrant blonde highlights, a side-swept fringe, and textured spikes. This looked fantastic at the time — and it still does almost two decades later.

Highlighted, spiked hair was a common choice for young men at the time, and it was a far cry from the shaggier style that had dominated much of the ‘90s.

The unkempt look so beloved by fans of Oasis and Blur was much less popular by the time Beckham became an icon and countless males started to take greater care of their appearance.

Soon after, though, the David Beckham hairstyle evolved again — into the now-famous faux hawk.

Beckham helped to popularise this innovative cut in the early to mid-2000s, though some men and women alike still wear faux hawks proudly today.

His hairstyles continued to change in dramatic fashion in subsequent years, as he experimented with no-frills ponytails and sophisticated side-parts, to varied responses.

However, recent media coverage of David Beckham hair has focused more on its apparent shedding rather than its trend-setting style.

David Beckham hair loss rumours

Beckham appeared to be experiencing hair loss in his early 40s, based on photographs from summer 2018.

Rumours of a hair transplant persisted around that time, and it’s possible that he cut his hair short in preparation for a restorative procedure.

By September 2018, the David Beckham hair transplant speculation seemed to be well-founded: his hair had clearly grown out from its buzzcut into a thicker, fuller style. This was evident when he made a notable public appearance in Hong Kong.

David Beckham hair transplant: is it true?

Beckham has remained tight-lipped about his hair regrowth. But by studying images from later in 2018, we can see that his hair did appear to be much thicker than it had been earlier in the year.

His hair growth looked more youthful but still natural — a clear sign of a hair transplant. It’s also fair to assume that Beckham visited the best hair clinic he could find, regardless of the cost, to ensure maximum satisfaction.

And if he did undergo a hair transplant, the results were certainly impressive.

That’s because the latest hair restoration technology enables surgeons to perform transplants with incredible accuracy and efficiency. While it’s obvious that a significant change occurred in David Beckham’s hair within a fairly brief period in 2018, there were no scars or other physical indications of a procedure.

However, images captured in summer 2020 suggested another procedure might be on the cards.

His hair appeared noticeably thinner on top as he was spotted out and about in the Cotswolds. If he did get a hair transplant before, would he have another in the future? That’s only for Beckham and his inner circle to know.

At least, until the next time his luscious hair makes headlines!

What hair transplant did David Beckham have?

If David Beckham underwent a hair transplant in 2018, it’s likely that he opted for Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

This is a popular alternative to the more outmoded Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) method. But how are they different?

FUE explained

The FUE hair transplant is a common solution for anyone looking to restore their hair and reignite healthy growth for natural, lasting results.

It’s a minimally-invasive procedure, unlike the FUT. A surgeon uses a cutting-edge handheld tool to extract follicular units from the back and sides of the head (the “donor areas”). These are removed in a staggered pattern to avoid thinning patches that may draw unwanted attention.

Once this harvesting phase is complete, the patient enjoys a break before the follicles are implanted into the balding areas of the scalp. Different packages are available depending on the extent of the patient’s hair loss, ranging from 2000 to 6000 transplanted hairs.

Patients must have healthy hair growth on the back and sides of the head (as David Beckham did), to provide surgeons with ample donor follicles.

Hair will grow from the follicles as per the natural growth cycle. And the hair will be as dense as it used to be within 18 months or less.

This was the case with Beckham’s hair; the apparent thinning seemed to have been reversed, and the hair replaced by that of a younger man.

FUT

The FUT hair transplant is an invasive treatment that leaves visible scarring.

This is due to the difference in the harvesting phase: the surgeon removes a strip of flesh from the back of the head, instead of extracting follicular units separately. The strip will be cut into tiny pieces, and the donor follicles will be implanted into incisions across the thinning area(s) of the scalp.

As the remaining scar is noticeable, patients may choose to wear their hair longer to keep their surgery secret. This can make FUT a less appealing option for anyone who prefers to cut their hair in a shorter style.

The lack of a scar on the back of David Beckham’s head is further evidence that he opted for an FUE hair transplant.

Did David Beckham have a beard transplant?

Another rumour surrounding David Beckham hair regrowth relates to his beard. Did he undergo a beard restoration procedure?

Again, the man and his representatives have given nothing away, and it’s difficult to judge by comparing photographs. His beard appears fuller than it used to be, but this could simply be down to his grooming choices.

However, beard transplants are becoming increasingly popular as men aim to emulate Beckham and other celebrities with prominent facial hair. The procedure typically involves extracting donor follicles from the nape of the neck and implanting them into specific areas (the cheeks, moustache, etc.).

How can you have the David Beckam hair transplant?

If you’re experiencing hair loss, you may be a suitable candidate for an FUE hair transplant like David Beckham.

This isn’t the case for everyone, though: a lack of hair on the back and sides of the head can be an issue, as can persistent balding. For example, an individual affected by male pattern baldness would need to wait for the condition to run its course.

Why? Undergoing a hair transplant procedure before the male pattern baldness is complete could cause the implanted hair to fall out in the future. And subsequent treatments would be required.

That’s why a consultation ahead of your procedure is so important. A surgeon will examine your hair closely to determine if the thinning is likely to continue, and whether it may be best to wait before performing the transplant.

HairPalace is dedicated to helping you understand why a hair restoration treatment is right for you. And we use the FUE2 Safe System for every procedure: a state-of-the-art tool that empowers our surgeons with exceptional precision, and enables them to achieve outstanding results.
